I moved this question from the developer forum to the design forum, please read the forum descriptions and try to post in the correct forum to help us keep things organized.

To accomplish your goal you need to understand CSS and the use of Firebug or similar tools. You can make changes to styles in Firebug and once you find the correct changes you can add them to the css for your skin. Probably things like height, margin or padding will need to be adjusted form CSS.  See our article CSS Its All About Understanding Selectors, which may help you get started, but the web is full of good tutorials to learn what you need to know.
