In extending of custom module we have some member related information that I think the best entry point to these information is user profile page, So in my opinion a facility to add custom links to user profile (like adding custom menu to site administration page) is a nice feature to achieve is feature. For example we can implement the use order history out of the core system (may be in the web store feature) and add a link to user profile to see it.
