new version? (newer than 2.3.5.5?)

Hi Joe.  I see in the Important Skin Changes post there are quite a few additions for 2.3.5.6, but I don't see anything later than 2.3.5.5, in the "releases/downloads" page -- though I note from viewing the page's source that you're already running 2.3.5.6 here.

Just wondering when that might be ready for the rest of us?

I was so blissfully successful in doing that manual install of 2.3.5.5 last week or so, when the MSWebApp Gallery had done something destructive to the install file and wouldn't work properly, I decided to give upgrading a whirl, from one of my original 2.3.4.3 sites to the current (at least I thought it was) 2.3.5.5, and it worked like a charm; I even find that doing the manual upgrade keeps the old-version skins working; at some point I had tried just dropping the old-version skins into a site running a newer version, and doing it that way "broke" the skins, I mean just tore 'em slap up, but after doing a manual upgrade to a site, they still work.  Is that weird or what?  I can't puzzle it out, to know if I need to generate a new batch of the skins I've already made, to suit the newer versions of Mojo, or if the old skins will work fine with a few additions, like the square icons in the admin page.

Any ideas?

Thx!!!

Andria

Re: new version? (newer than 2.3.5.5?)

Hi Andria,

It will not be long before there is a new release available. This is just a case of the documentation getting a little ahead of the release because I try to document things as I make changes so that I don't forget about the changes when I do make the release.

I'm almost always running newer builds of mojoPortal here and on our demo site in order to try and shake out any bugs before making a new release.

I'm not sure about the errors you got when updating skins, maybe some file system permissions got funky or something.

When there are changes to the skins, I always maintain the skins under /Data/skins with each release and it should not be a problem after upgrading to copy the skins from /Data/skins to /Data/Sites/[SiteID]/skins if you want the latest versions of included skins in your site. It is always a good idea to use custom names for your own skins so that the included ones would not overwrite them if you do copy them into your site specific skin folder.

And you should always be able to update your custom skins according to the notes in our sticky thread after upgrading.

Best,

Joe

Re: new version? (newer than 2.3.5.5?)

Yes, after I posted that I realized that was probably the case, that you documented as you went, when it was fresh in your mind.

As for those skins that got "broken" when dropped into a newer version of Mojo... I have no earthly idea.  I'm still quite a neophyte with anything-ASP.NET, including Mojo, but at the time, even to call me a neophyte would have been generous -- "bumbling around with WebApps Gallery" sounds more on-target.  It could have been anything from incomplete uploads to god-knows-what.  Now that I have an upgraded site to play with, I'm going to start dropping in the old skins, the ones I made with 2.3.4.3, one at a time, and seeing how they fly.  I also have a whole stable of "business" type skins, in a wide assortment of colors, which I never did get around to putting up for download, so I can get those off the ground while I'm at it.

I've had to refer to those "Important Skin Changes" pages so often, I've started a text file for myself, with the most-referenced items, so I don't have to start up Firefox if it's not already running, just to edit a template with some of those changes! (mainly, the icons!)

Thx!

Andria

Re: new version? (newer than 2.3.5.5?)

Seeing something rather odd with one of those old skins; I dropped in the skin I actually use at my main Mojo-skin site, which is called New Cryptic Stripes.  It works very well, but the body versus body.pagebody thing in style-artisteer-overrides.css wasn't working; what I was seeing is the dark striped bg which is the main site bg, but with dark type, as it should be if the bg was white -- as it should be.

Then I realized that without an explicit  "background-image : none;" in the plain body tag of style-artisteer-overrides.css, it was likely picking up the bg image from the style.css -- the specified bg was "cascading" over the lack of a specific "background-image : none;", I think is what was happening.  This didn't seem to be a problem with earlier versions of Mojo, but probably it's a good thing that Mojo is supporting CSS more exactly.

Ain't CSS great. cheeky

Re: new version? (newer than 2.3.5.5?)

Hi Andria,

It is a misnomer to think that mojoPortal has the ability to support or not support CSS or to support it more correctly or less correctly.

All mojoPortal does is deliver html markup and CSS to the web browser, all visual rendering and use of CSS is done by the web browser which applies the CSS to the html to produce its visual rendering. We have no control over it at all beyond delivering it to the web browser.

The way you describe the background image cascade is correct but it has nothing to do with the version of mojoPortal and would have worked exactly the same in previous versions. It would be more likely that updates to the web browser cause a change in visual rendering rather than updates to mojoPortal, but the cascade behavior is pretty much the way it should work in all browsers.

Best,

Joe
