Please update Installer in Windows Web App Gallery to v.2.3.5.5

The Mojoportal Installer in the Windows Web App Gallery is out of date. Would you update this to version 2.3.5.5?

Re: Please update Installer in Windows Web App Gallery to v.2.3.5.5

Hi,

Usually there is about 1 week delay between when a new release is made and when I submit it to the web app gallery and then once submitted it can still take a while before Microsoft processes the updated version. I submitted version 2.3.5.5 on November 3rd, so I expect it will land in the gallery pretty soon.

However, one does not need to wait for it to land in the gallery, the codeplex downloads are all msdeploy packages that can be installed from IIS if you have installed msdeploy.

Re: Please update Installer in Windows Web App Gallery to v.2.3.5.5

Joe, there seems to be a problem installing 2.3.5.5, either with the web apps gallery at my host, or even with the web platform installer -- the wpi error says "downloaded file failed signature verification and may have been tampered with."

I also tried once again to a manual install, and still cannot do that -- it just keeps telling me it can't contact the database, no matter how I try to finagle the connection string.

So, I'm here wanting to set up a new mojoportal site, and cannot get the thing installed.  At this point I may just copy my installation of 2.3.5.4 from my new blog site, change the db/user/pw strings in user.config, and see if I can get it to fly that way, because I cannot get 2.3.5.5 installed by any means.

Re: Please update Installer in Windows Web App Gallery to v.2.3.5.5

I may have just succeeded in doing a manual install -- which would be a real first for me with mojo... I've always depended on the web apps gallery at my host, but it's not working for this installation.  The problem was with the download, so it may be the same problem as the failed file signature with the WPI. just a less verbose explanation of the problem.  And the tech support at Mocha is virtually non-existent.  no

And yes, from the looks of things, my manual installation seems to have actually completed.  Hallelujah!  I never thought this day would come! wink

I did not have a problem installing v.2.3.5.5

I successfully installed v2.3.5.5 using the Web Deployment Tool in IIS Manager (on Windows 7 x64). Because I had the default version of 2.3.5.4 installed I first used SQL Server Management Studio to delete the mojoportal database and users. Then I deleted the inetpub\wwroot\mojoportal directory. Finally, I used the Web Deployment Tool to install mojoportal.

Re: Please update Installer in Windows Web App Gallery to v.2.3.5.5

Hi,

The 2.3.5.5 version of mojoPortal went live in the web app gallery last night but apparently they made some mistake in posting it because I get the same error about it failing signature verification.

I've contacted Microsoft about the problem so hopefully it will get fixed later today.

The verification only is done when installing from the gallery, they check against a checksum to make sure the file that was downloaded matches the checksum of the file that I submitted to the gallery. When you install a package directly from IIS it does not do this, it is only needed for the gallery.

I'm sure I submitted the correct checksum for the file I submitted so it must have been a mistake on their end, in any case I'm sure they will help fix it, though they are on the west coast so it may be later in the day before the get to it.

Best,

Joe

Nice work on the manual install, Andria. Next step: Building and deploying from the source code! wink

Re: Please update Installer in Windows Web App Gallery to v.2.3.5.5

Actually I'm wondering now about this "Mono" business, so I could maybe try to run Mojo at my other host, which is Apache/Linux. (it's a much faster server there, so I'd like to see if that would fix that slow-start problem, or not -- i.e., is that slow-start thing an artifact of a) that host (shared server); b) the windows server environment; or c) something in mojo itself)

I have cPanel at that host, and there is a link in the Software/Services box for "Perl Modules," which indeed are Perl modules that can be installed.  I did a search in there for "mono" and lo, it came up with "Mono (undef)" -- Bindings for Mono -- so I'm wondering if this is all that would be necessary in order to run Mojo there, or if there is some other more fundamental thing that the host would have to install in order for "Mono" to run.  I really don't know anything about it; I've used Apache/Linux servers for about 10 yrs, but I got off of perl and onto php with all speed, given how much more high-level php is, for a non-programmer to understand and work with.

The thing is, all the docs I can find on this subject (yeah I actually read docs, I was introduced to "RTFM" back in 1990!) seem to assume that I have access to httpd.conf or something like that, but I don't; I'm on a shared server just as I am with my Windows server acct, because that's really all I can afford.  So I'm not sure I would ever be able to run something like Mono at my Linux hosting acct.

Hugely puzzled... indecision

Andria

PS: it turned out to really be a piece of cake to get that connection string working; I just copied a connection string from another mojo site of mine that works, replaced the db/user/pw info for the new site, and away we went... like so much of mojo, it turned out to be so easy, it made me feel like a total doofus!!!  wink

Re: Please update Installer in Windows Web App Gallery to v.2.3.5.5

Hi Andria,

My advice is to stick with Windows hosting for mojoPortal. You will have lots of trouble with mojoPortal running under Mono. I'd like to be able to recommend Mono but currently I think you can expect lots of things to not work or not work correctly under Mono whereas with Windows hosting you have none of those issues.

For more info feel free to read through some of the threads in our Linux/Mono Forum.

Best,

Joe

Re: Please update Installer in Windows Web App Gallery to v.2.3.5.5

Hi Andria, for the "slow start" problem you mentioned, you could try to use the AppKeepAlive task to prevent the application pool worker processes from timing out and shutting down. This happens on IIS because if a site receives no requests for 20 minutes (by default), the worker processes are shut down to optimize server resources.

If you have access to the IIS manager application (or can request this of your host), there is also a setting in the Application Pool properties: "Shutdown worker processes after being idle for (time in minutes). If, for instance, you expect that you'll get at least one visitor a day, you could set this to 1440, and you should not have any more slow startups (or just very rarely).

Re: Please update Installer in Windows Web App Gallery to v.2.3.5.5

Thanks for that tip, Jamie; apparently my host does use IIS7, but what is that "pipeline" bit?  And how would I know if they're using it?  Should I just go ahead and specify my site's URL in AppKeepAliveUrl anyway?  I looked all over the dotnetpanel at Mocha, but there is no reference to the application pool, or anything having to the do with the server itself.  Yeah, I know, you get what you pay for; someday maybe I can afford "managed hosting" where the host admin will actually do what I want them to do -- but I need those 6 lucky numbers first.laugh

Joe, that's a real bummer, since my Linux host is on such a MUCH faster server, but I'm not surprised; adding a layer of complexity to any of this seems to add an order of magnitude more problems.  I'll just keep hoping I can at some point afford a faster host.  Although if I can fix this "keep alive" problem, maybe this one isn't so bad -- just no tech support who's prepared to do anything except give me links to their knowledgebase -- god forbid they should ever READ what I write them and then WRITE back an appropriate answer.  Maybe they're outsourced and just don't speak English! surprise

Thx!!

Andria

Re: Please update Installer in Windows Web App Gallery to v.2.3.5.5

I thought it might be a bit of a longshot. The settings I'm referring to are accessed by actually entering the IIS manager program on the server. With shared hosting, they probably wouldn't want to give you access or make changes to that because it might limit them to 45 instead of 50 web sites hosted per box. wink

In any case, using the AppKeepAlive task should prevent the site slowdown after no activity for a period of time.

Re: Please update Installer in Windows Web App Gallery to v.2.3.5.5

Yep, it really does, it makes a huge difference.  It's kinda odd; I had noticed this slow-start thing with subsequent Mojo sites I setup -- subsequent to the first one, when I knew absolutely NADA! about asp.net or mojo or anything else about a windows server, but I had seen that "keep-alive" thing in web.config when I was first perusing it, trying to get a feel for how this whole shebang works -- and not knowing what I was doing, I set it to "true," though I knew nothing about the pipeline/url business, so that line was still blank -- but that site remained faster than any of my other mojo sites, though until now, I had no idea why!!!

Yeah, I really could use a slap in the head sometimes. surprise

So anyhow, going by that performance in my first site (the link is shown over there in the left column under my pic) it might be that I don't really need to have the URL setting, just the "true" part.  I have no understanding at all of windows servers, so I really have no way of determining about the pipeline thing, unless I just ask them (the host "tech support" -- that's what they call it; I call it a whole durn call-center of full-fledged morons), and I'd give it maybe 50/50 as to whether:  a) I get an answer at all that's pertinent to the question, and/or b) the answer would actually be correct.  *sigh*

But anyway I fixed that slow-start thing for all my mojo sites, so I am a happy camper.  I got another of my largely-inactive-because-it-was-such-a-damn-hassle-to-update Joomla sites moved to Mojo and didn't even have any problems with DNS or my host's weird error msgs to get it done, so again, happy camper.

Mojo just rocks, that's all there is to it. yes
