SEO friendly URLs for blog categories

As of now the category pages show with ugly URLs like "/Blog/ViewCategory.aspx?cat=18&mid=3&pageid=1". These are not SEO friendly URLs. Can this feature be built so that the URLs show as "/<categoryname>"  where <categoryname> is replaced by the actual category name? Notice the placement needs to be the same as the page title.

Thanks
Deepak

Re: SEO friendly URLs for blog categories

Hi,

The current plan on the road map is to make a new category sub system in mojoPortal core that can be re-used by features so we don't have to implement it over and over in each feature that needs categories. Then we will replace the current blog category system with the new one. At that time we will see about better category urls.

Best,

Joe

Thanks Joe for your reply.

Just wanted to be sure that this is not off the radar as I did not see specific details in the roadmap. But now that it is on your mind, I'm assured.

Thanks
Deepak

Re: SEO friendly URLs for blog categories

I was looking for something along these lines the other day and it will be a very handy feature once implemented.

My wife and I's labour of love site uses this extensively, in fact pretty much all the content on the site revolves around it!

Site is a wildlife site - www.gbwildlife.co.uk (based on blogengine) and all content is entered as a blog and categorized such as http://www.gbwildlife.co.uk/category/this-month.aspx.

On similar lines is is possible to turn off the show category tickbox in the blog settings but still assign categories to posts?  I don't particularly need to have visitors be able to click categories or want the space taken up on the page by the category list but being able to group posts together by category (and link to them if required) would be a handy feature especially once the above is implemented and they become SEO friendly.

As an aside there is a great list of planned features on the road map, being able to edit css and skins online would be very handy for tweaking (I guess we would be able to edit the masterpages as part of editing skins too?).

Re: SEO friendly URLs for blog categories

In the latest version of mojoPortal it is possible to assign categories with "Show Categories" unchecked.

Yes, the plan is to be able to edit layout.master as well as CSS, though there is great potential for users to break things by making mistakes in layout.master. Any mistake in that file and it will fail to load it and fall back to a failsafe layout.master. There won't really be any good way to validate the layout.master, at most we can maybe test if it throws an error, or we can add something into the failsafe layout.master that gives information saying it failed to load the intended layout.master file.

Best,

Joe

Re: SEO friendly URLs for blog categories

Thanks Joe, as you say the failsafe will definitely be a 'must' as once the UI is broken it will be very difficult for (web) users to fix.

Andrew
