Blog module posted in right hand column keeps full posts there?

I have put a blog module on the homepage of a site I am developing for news and put it in the right hand column, used the excerpt options and it looks exactly as I wanted it to on the homepage. The problem I have is that when you click the read more... link it opens the full post but looks like it is still being contained with the right hand column on the (full) post page and not using the full width of the page - can I get round this or would I need to create the full page and then manually create a shorter blog post and create a link to the page in the entry?  Having reread this I am not sure it is clear what I mean....... if I put the blog module on the homepage, click edit and create new post which is then MyNews.aspx and use the excerpt options to get it down to the first 100 characters on the homepage (in the right hand column), when I click the read more link MyNews.aspx will have the full text but will be contained with the right hand column - hope that makes more sense.

The other problem I am having is that I can't assign a category to a post, if I click the Add Category button nothing seems to happen, if I click the edit category link I can see categories I have added tho??

2nd EDIT - I added a blog module to another page and added a category before any posts - this show up fine and can be ticked. Again though clicking the Add Category button does not seem to do anything. Also there is a categories text box, is this used for creating the tag cloud? I think some of these problems are down to my misunderstanding how a few bits work....

Andrew

Re: Blog module posted in right hand column keeps full posts there?

Hi Andy,

I am not able to replicate the issue where the blog detail is on the right side instead of center. It could possibly a skin specific issue. If you can produce the problem on demo.mojoportal.com, I'll take a look.

What many people do is keep the blog on a separate page, then use a Feed Manager on the home page to consume the feed from the blog and show the recent posts. However, if you want to try that, you should avoid moving a blog from one page to another after it already has posts. You could either create a new blog on a new page, or rename your current home page to blog and keep the blog on it, then create a new home page and move it into the home page location.

When creating a blog post, existing categories are shown as check boxes you can select. To create a new category type it into the text box and click the Add Category button. When you create categories and flag posts with those categories, it produces a list of categories with the number of posts in each category. There is a setting in the blog to show the categories as a cloud, if you check that then the size of the fonts for categories will be weighted according to how many posts it has. You can see this in my blog. In a CSS you could alter the width of the side column in the blog to make it wider may make it more cloud like than if it is in a narrow column. You can also tweak the font sizes from CSS.

Hope it helps,

Joe

Re: Blog module posted in right hand column keeps full posts there?

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the input.

Starting with the easy bit I was approaching the Add Category button backwards really as I was expecting it to open a list that you could then add a category to ........ should have really realised that this would be duplicated functionality as the edit categories link already does this!

On the blog post I also couldn't create it on the demo site so thought it must be a skin issue.  However if I change the skin on the site to any of the included skins it still has the same effect, it seems to be adding about 200px to the left hand side of the text.  I had a look with google chrome's inspect element feature and with firebug and had a look at the elements, on the demo site (and using artisteer24verticalmenu3 which my skin is based on) I am getting a main content width of 684px whereas using the same setup on my development site I am only getting a width of 488px ........ not very sure why that is?  It doesn't seem to matter which skin is applied - for example if I apply artisteer24headermenu then I get a main content width of 949px on the demo site versus 739px on my site......

Not really sure where this width is getting applied from but it seems to be hanging around (although varying a little) - what would you recommend I do - follow your instructions for turning off css caching, force a refresh and have a very good root around in the css?  The site is also running on 2.3.4.4 MSSQL so I might upgrade it and see if that has any effect......

Re: Blog module posted in right hand column keeps full posts there?

I think that I have tracked this down or rather found a 'fix'/cause.

I created another blog in the left hand column (which when using artisteer24verticalmenu3 appears under the navigation) and noticed that if I went through the same process it created the same ~200px gap on the left hand side.  I realised that this was being caused by my unticking the Navigation on Right checkbox.  I had already unticked the calender, rss buttons etc so in effect there was no navigation but by unticking this box the space was still being reserved for the navigation.  Ticking the box again sorts the problem smiley

I wasn't able to verify it on the demo site as it looks like the password has been changed but will have a check in the next few days.

Ahh, I should have thought of that. Joe Davis reported this issue not long ago and I already fixed it. The demo site is running the latest code which already has the fix.

Best,

Joe

Will update this installation before the site goes live - bit of an unfortunate coincidence this as if I had left any of the navigation/buttons visible it would have been obvious! lol

Wow, I kept reading this thread and never remembered the bug report I made about this problem. I think I better start getting some more sleep.

Later,
Joe D.

Sorry, I needed 667 posts. I don't like 667 minus 1.
