Feeds Manager, New Window Link

I wish to display feeds on my web site but I don't want them to leave the web site when clicking on a feed link. Is there a way to bring up the feed in a new window?

Re: Feeds Manager, New Window Link

Hi Nickka, I believe this would be a feature request, since it would have to involve an option to construct the feed links with a target="_blank" attribute. I'll leave it to Joe to comment on that.

However, it's my personal belief that in today's online environment, links set to open in new windows are probably becoming an annoyance to users. The reason is that anyone who is remotely savvy about browsing the Internet (which should be nearly everyone by now), already knows that they can use shift-click or ctrl-click on a link to open it in a new window/tab, or right click on the link and use the context menu to do the same thing. I use this all the time when browsing forums. And if they didn't mean to navigate away, there's always the back button.

I assume that you want to maximize your users' time spent on your site, but I don't believe doing this will help in that regard. If the user wants to move on to another site, leaving your site open in another browser window or tab probably isn't going to bring them back if they don't want to come back.

Just my $.02.

Jamie

Re: Feeds Manager, New Window Link

I've put it on my list to look into providing an option to make feed links open in a new window.

Personally I'm not a fan of opening new windows, I think users should be in control at all times and browsers have built in support to open links in a new window or tab as Jamie rightly points out. However I know some people want to do it anyway and I'm willing to look into making it possible.

Of course since most internal links use relative urls you could potentially use javascript to make all external links open in a new window

Best,

Re: Feeds Manager, New Window Link

Just throwing in my .02 as well. I am actually the opposite. I like it when a link opens in a new tab (new windows I hate but who has a browser these days that does not utilize tabs.) Call me lame but the less clicks the better. I don't want to leave a site when a follow a bread crumb, i want my loaf of bread where i left it.. in my first tab. I also don't want to go out of my way to always right click or shift click every time i click an external link.

To me it is good design to keep people where they started and not have to venture back if they forget or didn't realize it was an external link. As noted above, i see tabs as my bread crumb trail.

Just my cents..

Side note: Just started with mojo and its great. Hope to get my .Net on again and contribute some.
