Hi Matthias,
The full size images are used in some scenarios. For example if you have "Compact Mode" enabled in the settings then the web size image links to the full size image. Also when the Image Gallery is used on My Page I think the more link goes to another page where you can page through the images one at a time and there also the web size image links to the full size one.
