article "end date" and identification by email

First, sorry for my bad English, I'm french...

-1- I have a setup with users whose only right is to access the blog, in order that they can publish articles. How can these users can specify an "end date" of publication of their article? (which passes when the archive date is reached).

-2- I chose in the settings of the site an identification of users by email. The problem is that when recording, it is still required to complete the "username" field. How to avoid this requirement ?

Thanks,

Thierry

Hi  Thierry,

1- When you add a blog post can see an 'end date' field that can set it for end of a blog post.

2-For this question what is your version that you use and what is your database platform. I will test it .

Best,

Asad

Re: article "end date" and identification by email

Hi Thierry,

What Asad has said is incorrect. There is no end date in the blog nor have I ever seen one in any blog. You can delete a post if you want but its a very unusual use case.

When you create web pages they "should" generally be permament. They get indexed by google and other search indexes and its not good if later they become 404 page not found errors when people click the search results. Its bad for your page rank and search engine optimization.

No-one has ever asked me to implement an end date for blog posts. Its not a common scenario to want to do that.

Hope it helps,

Joe

Re: article "end date" and identification by email

Hi Joe and  Thierry,

Excuse me for incorrect answer . I think what Thierry was asked is suitable for advertisement company that add advertisement items for show in a limited time. In my opinion a feature like html Content with supporting multi Items maybe a nice feature to have. This feature will be a things between the Blog module and multi items html Content.

Best,

Asad

Re: article "end date" and identification by email

Html feature does not support multiple items, but you can schedule publishing of an Html modue on a page and you can set and end date using the Admin > Content Manager. The page itself does not go away but the content does. Still it seems a wierd use case unless the page title and url are generic or un-related to the content of the html instance. Like for an ad as you suggest seems ok but not for real content like articles. They "should" have a page title and url that reflects the content of the article and they "should not" disappear after some end date.

Hope it helps,

Joe

Re: article "end date" and identification by email

I totally agree with your point of view but informations published here are updated after a certain date because they are purely organizational informations (schedules, locations, events, tips,  changes etc..).

About my second question : " I chose in the settings of the site an identification of users by email. The problem is that when recording, it is still required to complete the "username" field, which is useless. How to avoid this requirement ? ".

Thanks a lot

Re: article "end date" and identification by email

Hi,

For your scenario it seems you could schedule end dates for html content in the content manager.

About your second question. The issue is that username is required because you could change that setting at any time back to use username. What I will do for the next release is add a Web.config setting that will allow you to hide it and in that case we will autogenerate a unique username. You are not the first one who has asked about how to remove that and its not a big development effort.

Best,

Joe
