I think most people do this kind of thing by making a copy of the main skin and then modify it for the home page so that the home page uses a different skin than other pages, then the slider can be added directly in the layout.master file of the home page skin.

Another option is to add a content section to the header area of the main skin which would allow you to add an html content instance to the home page in the header section.
