Search from front page not working

Search from front page not working

If I search from the home page, I don't get results.  If i then search from the results page, it works fine.

<portal:SearchInput id="SearchInput2" LinkOnly="false" RenderAsListItem="false" runat="server" />

I have that in a fiv floating right on my layout.master.  Any ideas what I'm missing?

I have no idea, when I copy that and paste into the layout.master of a skin it works as expected. I cannot reproduce the problem.
