The Mono Demo Site is Back Online Thanks to GrokThis.net Hosting

Some of you may have noticed in the last month or so that the mojoPortal Mono Demo site (mono.mojoportal.com) was not performing well and was offline frequently and I'm afraid that was giving the wrong impression that either mono or the mono version of mojoPortal was unstable. But I assure you this was not the case. The problem was that I was hosting the site over a cable modem on a dev machine. Not exactly robust.

I think it was not the best way to make a good impression for people new to mono and not exactly fair either.

Before the 2.0 .NET framework came out, this site was hosted on Mono for about a year with excellent uptime, performance and stability at GrokThis.net and now thanks to their gracious sponsorship, the mono demo site is hosted there. GrokThis.net, hosts quite a few mojoPortal sites on mono and everyone I know has been very happy with their sites running there. I think having the mono demo site hosted there will make a much better impression.

It is only natural that it will take some time for the mono project to catch up on the 2.0 .NET implementation but progress is being made. It is only a matter of time and the 2.x version of mojoPortal will run on mono and we will be back to having one version of mojoPortal that runs on all platforms.

In the meantime I'm shooting for a release this weekend of 2.1 for Windows/.NET 2.0 which has some very exciting new features I'll blog about soon and a 1.0.2 maintenance release for linux/mono or 1.1 NET

Hello,

I am unable to upload images on the mono version.

I thought it was a problem on my machine (gentoo - mono 1.13.6) but you have it on your demo site as well.

This is at the moment the only (and very anoying) bug (at least if you are trying to get the image gallery to work ;-)

Jelle

Hi Jelle,

When I first uploaded the new demo site I got an error when I tried adding an image to the gallery but my host fixed something and it works for me now. I just uploaded an image of a tornado to the demo site image gallery with no error. I thought maybe he had not installed libgdiplus whjich is needed to convert the thumbnails but he said all he did to fix it was update the LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

When did you get the error on the demo site? It worked just now.

Just a few minutes before my previous post...

I've recompiled libgdiplus and also updated my whole installation.

I jus added a "bag" tot the image gallery (the same picture as I tried before). This time it worked ?!?

I'll look into the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to see if there is something I am doing wrong....

Thanks,

Jelle

I forgot to mention some details, my machine still has problems after the recompile.

The upload of the "bag" was to your demo 1.0x site worked.

Hi Jelle,

I wish I could be more help. Maybe a mono bug?

I see you have nice galleries on your site that are not part of  mojoportal. Is that an open source gallery?

Joe,

I used lightbox and a custom aspx page to generate it (indeed my mono-box has problems with gdi-plus, so automatic thumbnail generation does not work).

http://www.huddletogether.com/projects/lightbox2/

From the faq:
Can I use the script in a commercial project?
Yes. It is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License. A donation would be nice, hint hint.

It would be nice if mojoportal would support this gallery. I just find that adding all my images to mojo is somewhat of a pain, wouldn't it be nice if mojo could be directed to a directory containing pictures (and automatically sort it by name).

Regards,

Jelle

Cool, Thanks! We definitely need a better image gallery in mojoportal.
