I've added a request in our project tracker for this, simialr to the option we currently have in the forums to show the search box.

Note however that the main site search works with the blog so for designs that are using a searchbox instead of a search link in layout.master it already works and having an additional one on the blog page would be redundant. But I can see the case for it when there is only a search link on the page like most of the Artisteer skins have.
