Facebook Authentication

Hi,

I liked the idea of using OpenId, but when I visited the www.idselector.com site I found that they charge a $1000 a year for commercial sites to use the selector widget.  I found a JQuery based widget selector at http://jvance.com/pages/jQueryOpenIdPlugin.xhtml and I integrated that into mojoPortal, that all seems to work fine, but I would also like to add Facebook OAuth 2.0 authentication, before I start, has anyone does this already?

Thanks,

Vince.

Re: Facebook Authentication

Hi Vince,

We do have support for RPX service (there is a free version). See the document here:

http://www.mojoportal.com/using-rpx-instant-open-id-single-sign-on-service.aspx

Best,

Joe

Re: Facebook Authentication

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the reply, I did read that document, but when I went to the RPX website (now Janrain Engage) the only free version was for independent bloggers and hobby websites.   I have now integrated Facebook authentication and I just have to bind that to a Siteuser.  I would have much preferred to use your version,  but I didn't want to fall foul of the Janrain licensing.

Best Regards,

Vince.

Re: Facebook Authentication

Hi Vince,

It does seem that they have changed their pricing and terms over time. I don't think you would really run afoul of their licensing so much as bump up against the limited number of users that are supported with the free package.

I can tell you that for this site I pay $100/year but I contacted them directly and managed to get a better deal that has much higher user limits than the normal $100 package. However, it may have been that they were willing to negotiate with me because I integrated their service into mojoPortal, so not sure how flexible they are with others.

To me, Facebook is just one provider and the real benefit of RPX is that they handle all the differences between different authentication providers and they keep up with security issues and API changes. I get many more site registrations based on Gmail or Yahoo users than on Facebook or Twitter, though I do get quite a few also using Facebook or Twitter.

Best,

Joe

Re: Facebook Authentication

Thanks Joe,

I've had another look and it does say that I can have up to 5000 unique visitors a year, so I'll give it a try.

Best Regards,

Vince.
