Mojoportal Licensing query

Hi Joe,

I read your licensing coditions a while back, and would just like to confirm them in laymens terms as i'm not great with reading about all the technicalities and such

Am i correct in saying that you don't mind people using mojoPortal for their own personal gain, i.e. making a site for someone else and charging them for your time, as long as you do not try to hide fact that it is indeed mojoPortal powering the site. Also the site should have a link on the footer saying something like 'powered by mojoPortal and linking it to your site to help spread the mojoPortal name.

Of course it goes without saying that buying you a beer to say thanks for your hard work in developing such a great CMS is a unwritten must.

I would really like to confirm the above, so that any sites i do in the future comply with mojoPortals terms and conditions and of course help support mojoPortals future for many years to come.

Hi Tim,

I certainly don't mind people making money on projects using mojoPortal, in fact I encourage it. I hope that folks doing that may share a little love now and then and maybe encourage their customers to buy my add on products if they have a need for them, or buy a license and bundle it in with the price you charge the customer for completing their project.

Actually there is no requirement to keep a powered by mojoportal link though it is appreciated, you are free to remove it. What I don't like to see is where they use mojoPortal and put powered by "ourowncustomportal" or try to make it look like their own product the site is running on.

The license is mainly concerned with redistribution, like if you build a product on top of mojoportal and want to make it available for download you can include mojoPortal as long as you indicate you are including it and it is licensed under the CPL. Your custom feature(s) bundled with it can have their own license and it doesn't have to be the same as mojoportal license as long as you acknowledge that mojoportal is included under it's own license.

Thanks very much Joe, I was hoping for a response along those lines.

I've always believed in good work ethics so will of course be buying you a beer very soon to show some appreciation for your hard efforts in creating a great CMS, and for always being there on the forum to help answer all those tech questions and feature requests :)

Hi Joe,

Interested in the licensing of mojoPortal. Basically love what you have achieved and use it for my own website,  excellent product.

However, i just want to find out more on the licensing. 

I'm looking to creating websites for clients but not show the mojoPortal link, basically a white label.

We of course do not want to sell another mojoPortal as our own product, just create new websites without the link. We have a whole host of controls we would like to add to our own mojoPortal but before we proceed we just want to know if you would agree to this. There may be a whole crate full of beers in it for you ;)

If so, please can you provide details of your standard terms and pricing.

Hi Rob,

There is no requirement to keep the powered by mojoportal. The only thing I don't like to see is when someone uses mojoPortal and then puts "powered by something else".

Designer links are a separate issue because designs are under their own licences by the designers so you have to work it out with the designer if you want to remove the design by link, or else make a custom skin of your own.

Licensing of mojoPortal mainly covers distribution of software, there are no clauses about how you use it, so if you are not packaging/distributing downloads then there is not much chance of license violation. However it is allowed to package and distribute mojoPortal along with custom features (which can be under other licenses), but you cannot change the license of mojoPortal and would have to indicate that the package does contain mojoPortal licensed under the CPL. Distributing mojoPortal without acknowledging it and stating its license would be a violation.

I recommend that whatever value added you plan to build, you should never modify mojoPortal code, all customizations should be in custom projects and plugged in without changing mojoPortal.   Once you start down that path of modifying mojoPortal directly it is hard to get back on track and you will basically have a forked version with no ability to upgrade without losing your customizations.
