Email form is eating error, and 'from address'...

From my form I was getting this error(emails removed) in the logs:

2010-01-17 16:27:36,802 ERROR mojoPortal.Net.Email - error sending email to test@example.com from test@example.com, message was: test<br />test@example.com<br /><br /><p>ghfghffghs</p><br /><br />
System.Net.Mail.SmtpFailedRecipientException: Mailbox name not allowed. The server response was: sorry, that domain isn't allowed to be relayed thru this MTA (#5.7.1)
at System.Net.Mail.SmtpTransport.SendMail(MailAddress sender, MailAddressCollection recipients, String deliveryNotify, SmtpFailedRecipientException& exception)
at System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient.Send(MailMessage message)
at mojoPortal.Net.Email.SendEmailNormal(SmtpSettings smtpSettings, String from, String replyTo, String to, String cc, String bcc, String subject, String messageBody, Boolean html, String priority, String[] attachmentPaths, String[] attachmentNames)

However the web page told me the email sent just fine.  Seems like it should say an error happened?

Also, is there a way to make the "from" address equal to the address entered?  So the person could get the email and easily reply?

MSSQL 2.3.3.4

Re: Email form is eating error, and 'from address'...

Hi,

There is no reason to show the user who submitted the form an error even if email is not configured correctly because the message is received and can be viewed under View Messages regardless of whether the email is configured correctly.

Spoofing the entered address as the from address would be a bad idea because that is what spammers do and it can make the email land in the spam box and tarnish the reputation of the smtp server that relays the message.

We do use the entered email address as the "Reply To" address, in some email clients this works fine and you can click reply and it will use the reply to address while some email clients don't do this so we include the email at the top of the body of the message so you can paste it into a reply if needed. The from address is the from address listed in Site Settings Email From address, and generally it should be the same as the email user configured in smtp settings or at least an email address using the same domain as the one in smtp settings.

Hope it helps,

Joe

OK... beggers can't be choosers.... but it would be nice to see two changes made to the contact form.

1. The option to have the from address be the address entered.  Default it to the way it is... but the option would be nice.

2. The option to NOT have the email saved as it is now.

It is easy enough to add these options, I will put it on my TO DO list.

Best,

Joe
