It actually starts tracking as soon as it says it is tracking. The data is not quite real time but almost. The thing that is not obvious is that you can set the end date of a report to the current date and see the data it has recorded so far today.

Be sure also to submit your site maps to google webmaster tools so that google knows how to index your content for search.
