File Download Area

Hi Joe,

I'd like to create a simple download area for anyone to download files from. I was thinking of a links page but not sure where the best place to create a folder to put the files in with reference to the site root. This method I don't mind for small amounts of files but...

I wouldn't mind using the shared folder option but don't want to allow uploads or even better, is there a way to have a folder that emulates 'browsing' so someone could right mouse click and save the file that way?

Thanks, Adam

Re: File Download Area

Forgot to add that this is a multiple site setup and I'd like to keep the files from the site under that structure i.e. /Sites/1/... but to be honest I've never done this before and I don't know what the URL and subfolders would point to.

Re: File Download Area

Hi Adam,

The shared files feature only allows upload by users with edit permissions on the page or module, other users who can only view the page or module can only download. Shared files is what I would use, of course its possible to use the links module or even the html module to link to files. Using file manage you can create folders beneath /Data/Sites/[SiteID]/ and you could organise files there as you wish, the urls would be http://yoursiteroot/Data/Sites/[SiteID]/[whatverfolderyoumake]/whateverthefilenameis.fileextension.

Hope it helps,

Joe

Re: File Download Area

Thanks Joe,

I'll give it a go. Just to expand on a few points though. Are you meaning the Portal Filemanager to create any folders/subfolders? If so I think that's one area I was going wrong on and second even though my url of www.sitename.com brings me into the correct site, are you saying any reference must be www.sitename.com/data/sites/[sitenumber/ etc?

If the latter is the case, can it be hidden so you're not seeing the full link and data/sites/.. etc. part or is this technically not possible. Only reason is that it highlights there could be multiple sites there.

Thanks, Adam

Re: File Download Area

Yeah, if the files are located beneath the /Sites/[SiteID] folder obviously that is going to be part of the url. I know some people will create a virtual directory that maps to the /Data/Sites/[SiteID] folder for each site and then use the virtual directory path instead of the real path to hide it.

Hope it helps,

Joe
