mojoPortal VS. DNN

How would you say mojoPortal compares to DotNetNuke?  I've been messing around with that portal as well, but am very disapointed that the whole thing is written in VB...

DNN has a few years of development time on me and therefore a lot more features but I think they will have a long way to go to get it to run on mono and I'm not sure whether it works with databases other than MS SQL or MSDE. I've installed it a few different times and played with it but I haven't really studied the architecture in depth. I'm much more familiar with Rainbow portal (http://www.rainbowportal.net) which is written in C# and has comparable features to DNN. I contributed the Blog module to the Rainbow Portal project and my http://www.joeaudette.com site is currently running with Rainbow. I know the Rainbow team is working on supporting more dbs and I know of one person, who has it working on mono .

I think the advantage I have in starting fresh is that I can test under mono with each feature as I implement it and I can improve the design using the body of knowledge that has accumulated over the last few years since those applications were developed.

I've actually been using DNN since the beginning, and even did a lot of development on it.  I am very sad to see that DNN has fallen into the realm of putting more and more time into their Paid Version now vs the community version  I've been a developer for 15 years and mojoPortal is by far the best I have seen.  I came across it because we are implementing it for a HUGE law firm in Indianapolis area.  Joe, when we get it up and running would appreciate maybe listing us as we are a Microsoft Gold Partner as well.

Look forward to working with the community and working with the code.  Great job Joe.

Sounds great! Once you're up and running let me know. Its always nice to see people switching from DNN, I still think very few DNN users have even heard of mojoPortal but its starting to change, getting in the Web App Gallery has helped a lot.

Hi

I spent 3 years developing modules in Rainbow and really liked it.  Too bad it just faded away and went stagnant about 4 years ago.  I see some similarities between Rainbow and mojoPortal which explains to me that Joe did use and liked Rainbow.

After Rainbow I spent 6 months in DNN and it was ok for development but...  DNN is so slow performance wise you need a good server to pump out that code which people sometimes don't find with shared hosting.  Man..... is DNN slow.

Finding MojoPortal a month ago has been huge for me.  It's the first time I've been excited about developing in nany years.  mojoPortal is just TOO GOOD!!!

I am building 2 modules right now.  One for a non-profit club I belong to and one for my employer.  I am using Telerik controls inside the modules and they work fine.  Their Radgrid is very flexable.  For DAL and CRUD I am using Teleriks OpenAccess ORM tool.  I am new to it but It's very good.  They even have a free Express Edition of it.  here  It's worth a look.

Glad you found mojoPortal!

Back in 2003 I also used Rainbow and I contributed the first blog module to Rainbow. As I got interested in Mono back then I considered trying to make it possible to support more databases and to run on Mono using Rainbow, but I found the architecture needed pretty much a re-write to support more dbs because there was no abstraction, db code was mingled right in the web code. So in 2004 I decided to start mojoPortal from scratch using the IBuySpy portal which was the starting point for both Rainbow and DotNetNuke.

To me it seemed the Rainbow project fell apart in 2004-2005 due to too many people with commit access (working in opposite directions at times) a lot of disagreements and lack of strong leadership as Manu seemed to have lost interest and no-one else involved was in a position to be seen as the new leader. Suddenly a new young guy who had not been involved very long was the main admin, when he decided they needed to use Community Server instead of Rainbow for the Rainbow community site I knew it was on its way to the deadpool. 

Anyway, again, glad you found mojoPortal.
