It is designed for media attachments like podcasting or videocasting. For other files you don't need to use that you can just upload files like pdf or doc using the link toolbar in the editor which allows you to upload files and link to them. The media files need to be attachments so we can put them correctly in the rss feed to support podcasting/itunes.
