Every forum notification message has a link that you can click to unsubscribe from the thread.

You can subscribe to an entire forum on the forum list page, or you can subscribe to a thread when you post on the thread. ie you can subscribe to the developer forum or the design forum or the bugs forum, or all the forums, etc. Thread notification is primarily so you can know if someone responded to your post without subscribing to the whole forum.
